Could a texting ban become a reality?
Thousands of people die each year across the country because drivers are distracted.
Cell phones being the leading factor contributing to that high number of deaths.
Carlos Maldonado - Chief of Police, City of Laredo
"One of the things we're finding out in the traffic enforcement arena is that the cell phone has become very problematic for safe driving."
Police Chief Carlos Maldonado stands firmly behind city council if the texting while driving ban will save lives, and he's not the only one.
Surely many of you at home have seen Sheriff Martin Cuellar's public service announcement.
"Lets text her--crash--the text message can wait your safety cant."
He says its important to spread the message.
Martin Cuellar - Webb County Sheriff
"Your car can be used as a weapon unintentionally so its important to keep your eyes on the road and not be distracted."
Statistics show 6,000 teens die each year in car fatalities due to distractions, with cell phone use being the leading cause, and the state of Texas leads with the most teen fatalities."
Representatives for teens in the drivers seat, a program aimed at preventing teen deaths say this ordinance will benefit the community.
Albert Torres - President, Teens In the Driver Seat
"This is a plus for our program and our community as a whole cause it makes our community aware of the dangers of driving while using the cell phone."
And sheriff Cuellar invites us all to take a minute and think.
What if you seriously injured someone?
Or heaven forbid killed someone because your cell phone distracted you.
"I have people in our jail currently that are serving time and they have that burden and that’s something you really don’t want."
